As a casual supply, relief or substitute teacher, one of the most challenging aspects of the job is remembering the names of all the students in your class. Not knowing students’ names makes it difficult to call on students for answers and to call out students needing redirecting. It can be a daunting task, especially if you’re only with the class for a short period of time. However, there are several strategies that can help you remember your students’ names.
Here are 10 different ways to remember students’ names as a casual supply teacher:
- Name tags: These are handy to be able to call on students anywhere during the day. You can purchase sticky labels, masking tape or reusable plastic sleeve badges that students can clip on. It may cost you a little money, but worth it if it makes your day easier.
- Design a desk tag: If their desks don’t already have one, students can design one. This can be great as a fast finishing activity they can continue working on.
- Seating plan: Draw a seating chart before the class arrive and write each student’s name in their spot as you call the roll. This way, you can refer to the chart throughout the day and surprise students by knowing their names.
- Repeat the names: When you first introduce yourself to the class, have each student say their name out loud. Then, repeat each name back to them to help reinforce it in your memory.
- Word play: Using mnemonic devices or alliteration using the first letter of each student’s name to help you remember.
- Name games: Get students to say a fun fact about themselves or do an action as they introduce themselves to you.
- Ask for help: Ask the students to help you remember their names by reminding you of their names throughout the day. Remind them there is only one of you and lots of them, so please be patient.
- Random pickers: Many classes will have popsticks with names on them so you can call on students for responses. Using these will help commit the names to your memory. There are also online options that are a fun and effective way to randomly call on students.
- Use repetition: Use each student’s name as often as possible throughout the day to help reinforce it in your memory.
- Write it down: Take notes throughout the day, including each student’s name, to help you remember their names in the future.
To decide which method will work best for you, I would work out what kind of learner you are. If you are a visual learner, name tags or seating plans will work best. If you are an aural learner, repeating names or word play might be the key for you and for those kinesthetic learners, I would give name games a whirl.
It can be a tall ask to remember 27+ names in one day, BUT it can make all the difference to your day and your relationship with the class if you at least make the effort.
